Anna Cooks Japanese?! #2: Kanitama etc

As I mentioned in Anna Cooks Japanese?! #1 it is one of my 2013 New Year’s resolutions to learn how to cook Japanese food following Amy Kaneko’s book Let’s Cook Japanese Food!: Everyday Recipes for Home Cooking, using only locally* available ingredients and of course with my sisters Maru and Nina.

Our two recipes for the evening were Kanitama (Chinese-Style Crab Omelet with Soy Sauce Gravy) and Hiyashi Chuka (Cold Noodle Salad with Sesame and Vinegar Sauce).

The Crab Omelet turned out great! No complaints about the end result (other than the presentation lol) so this recipe is definitely a keeper!

The Cold Noodle Salad was a tedious recipe. So many ingredients so much prep and it was getting really late. All three of us were crabby and made some stupid mistakes such as making too many noodles (Doh!), using three times the amount of salt in the overcooked omelet (barf), being too lazy to cut up the nori *cough* Maru *cough* and not having anything to grind the sesame seed with (groan). Put all those things together and yes, it was wretched.
Since I’m missing several taste modifying ingredients, all of the recipes we have made so far have tasted very very similar (not this flavor again!) and we all agree – no more sesame seeds!

Next time around we will be choosing a different variety of recipes. Taking a break from eggs will be nice and hopefully I can get my hands on some of the missing ingredients.

With our second cooking day complete, we look forward to the next!
